Landscape Lighting — THE BASICS
Low-voltage (12V) lighting is the ideal choice for residential landscapes—enhancing beauty, safety, and security while extending the enjoyment of outdoor spaces after dark. Easy to install and safe to handle, low-voltage systems are perfect for DIY projects, with wiring that can be simply buried in shallow trenches.
A landscape lighting system is made up of three key components: fixtures, which house and direct the light; a low-voltage transformer, which converts standard 120V power to safe 12V AC; and wiring with connectors, which deliver power from the transformer to each fixture throughout the landscape.
Landscape lighting includes a range of fixture styles for different effects. Spotlights highlight focal points, while flood lights cover wider areas. Path lights guide walkways and gardens, and hardscape lights accent patios, walls, and outdoor kitchens. In-ground and downlights provide hidden or overhead illumination, underwater lights enhance ponds and fountains, and specialty fixtures add decorative or ambient touches.
Landscape fixtures fall into two main categories: integrated and lamp-ready. Integrated fixtures have built-in LEDs for a sleek, all-in-one design, but must be replaced if the LED fails. Lamp-ready fixtures use replaceable bulbs, offering flexibility in brightness, colour temperature, and beam spread, and are easier to maintain over time.
Beam spread refers to how wide light is cast from a fixture. Colour temperature, measured in Kelvin, determines how warm or cool the light appears—typically 2700K for warm white outdoor lighting. Lumens measure brightness, while wattage shows power consumption and helps size your transformer (use no more than 80% of its capacity). Efficacy, expressed in lumens per watt, indicates efficiency—LEDs produce more light using less power than traditional bulbs.
Landscape fixtures can be installed in several ways depending on the location. Most use a simple ground stake, but surface, gutter, or other specialized mounts are available when ground installation isn’t suitable.
